Aimee Mullins: Double Amputee Inspires
Dec 1st 2012, 00:48

Aimee Mullins has amazing athletic accomplishments, a successful modeling career, and has earned accolades as a motivational speaker. They are such great accomplishments that some people are surprised when they learn that this pillar of strength stands atop prosthetic legs.

Mullins' life is a testament to going beyond labels, to seizing the opportunities inside each of us.

Mullins was born without shinbones, the result of a condition called fibular hemimelia. At the age of one she had both of her legs amputated at the knee.

Doctors told her parents she might never learn to walk, but Mullins defied their limited expectations. With aid of prosthetic legs she not only learned to walk, she learned to run -- and fast.

Mullins was a star athlete at Georgetown, becoming the first amputee to compete on an NCAA track team. She went on to compete in 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta, setting three world records in the 100m, 200m and long jump.

In 1999, Mullins was invited to model on the runway for designer Alexander McQueen on hand-carved wooden legs complete with six-inch heels.

"I started to hyperventilate," Mullins told ABC News' Diane Sawyer. "I was backstage Kate Moss and all these incredible supermodels -- Naomi Campbell. And I was opening the show. And I thought, 'Aimee, you've done the Olympics, you can do this.'"

Mullins called the show a "seminal moment" in her life.

"it was beautiful and to have people respond to prosthetics, something that had always represented sadness or loss or not quite the real thing, and have them respond in awe and even coveting them," she said. It "was the kind of empowerment that-- I've never been the same since."

The McQueen show is but one highlight in a successful modeling career. Mullins became the face of a L'Oreal campaign for True Match and was named as one People's 50 Most Beautiful People.

But all the praise hasn't stopped her from being humble.

When asked for the secret to her success, she is quick to honor her supporters -- "people who said, 'Yes, Aimee, we can create anything between where your leg ends and the ground. Yes, we can make you as tall as you want to be. Yes. we can play with your body's ability.'"

Mullins strives to be one of those people for others, traveling around the country giving inspirational speeches, encouraging everyone to harness perceived shortcomings as a springboard for achieving lofty dreams.

"Hand somebody the key to their own power," Mullins said during her speech at TedMed, a conference for bold ideas.

"My issue is with the word, 'disabled,'" Mullins said, "[when] we use it to describe a human being, especially a child. You know, I think there are certain words like 'illegitimate' that should not be used to describe a person. And certainly, we have come far enough in our technology that our language can evolve, because it has an impact. I want a child who thinks, 'Wow, what can I do with my new leg?'"

Mullins cautioned that subjective words like "disabled" can act as shackles.

"It's factual to say I am a bilateral-below-the-knee amputee," she said. "I think it's subjective opinion as to whether or not I am disabled because of that. That's just me."

Ukraine's FM Rejects US Criticism of Elections
Dec 1st 2012, 01:59

Ukraine's foreign minister is rejecting criticism by the United States of recent parliamentary elections and of the prosecution of political opposition.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday, Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, also said U.S. concern about Ukraine's adherence to World Trade Organization commitments is unfounded.

Gryshchenko was in Washington for a conference organized by a Ukrainian-American group. On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton sharply criticized Ukraine in a broad speech about U.S. relations with Europe.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk's office said in a statement that he expressed strong U.S. concern in a meeting with Gryschenko on Friday. He called a Ukrainian request to increase tariff levels beyond World Trade Organization commitments unprecedented.

Gryshchenko said the criticism does not reflect broad cooperation between Ukraine and the United States.

Upset Dad Says Kindergarten Son Was Locked in Room
Dec 1st 2012, 02:09

A kindergarten teacher locked a 5-year-old boy in a small, dark room alone at the end of a school day then forgot the child there for over an hour, according to a southwestern Idaho father.

School officials said Friday they were investigating after hearing from James Cagle, who says that when his wife found their son the boy was crying and had urinated on himself.

"He was scared," Cagle told Boise television station KTVB (http://bit.ly/QSkPMB).

"You know just think about that," he added. "A 5-year-old boy."

Cagle said he and his wife panicked when their son didn't come home from his morning kindergarten class Wednesday. About 45 minutes after he was supposed to be home, they headed to Washington Elementary School to look for him.

Cagle said his wife and a school secretary found the boy crying and afraid in the small room in the dark, where he had apparently been for around an hour and a half after the teacher put him there for misbehaving.

"I know that if I locked my child in a room long enough for him to urinate on himself, I'd be going to jail or child protective services would dang sure be here taking him out of my house that night," Cagle said.

School officials dispute that the room was locked, saying the teacher would not have had a key. Assistant District Superintendent Monica White also noted that the door to the room has a large window, which allows light in from the hallway.

Still, officials acknowledge that the discipline was inappropriate.

The teacher "should not have done that," said District Superintendent Tim Rosandick.

"That's not a preferred practice," Rosandick added. "That is not what we would have wanted her to do."

The district hasn't released the teacher's name, nor will officials say whether she is still employed.

White also said she can't discuss what offense prompted the teacher to place the boy in the room, citing federal student privacy laws.

Cagle said administrators told him that an incident report had been placed in the teacher's personnel file, and that she was still teaching at the school.

Rosandick said the room is used for tutoring, where aides work with students one-on-one. It's also used for emotionally impaired students, when a child needs to be removed from a class for becoming violent.

Neither of those instances apply in this case, however, Rosandick said.

"What is very regrettable, and the teacher certainly feels awful about this, is the fact that the child was left in there and was, essentially, she had forgotten that she had placed the child in that room," said Rosandick.

The district is reviewing its policies and procedures on the tutoring rooms, White said.

Cagle has also met with the school principal, Steve Foley, who agreed to place his son in another kindergarten class.

"I'm not saying I want to get her fired. I don't want to ruin her career," Cagle said.

"But in the very same breath, it's my kid," he added.

Cagle said he has had other problems with the school, including three incidents where the boy didn't get home on the bus as he should have. Twice he was placed on the wrong bus, and once he wasn't placed on the bus at all.

Cagle said he complained each time. White, for her part, said she hadn't heard those reports and that it's possible school officials had not notified district administrators.

"The last thing we ever want to do is lose a child," White said.

Fla. Men Charged in Alleged Terror Plot
Dec 1st 2012, 02:12

Two South Florida men were charged Friday with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, federal officials said.

The suspects are brothers -- Raees Alam Qazi, 20, and Sheheryar Alam Qazi, 30.

They were both identified as naturalized citizens from Pakistan. They made their first court appearance Friday afternoon in federal court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The indictment alleges that between July 2011 and Nov. 29, 2012, the suspects were conspiring to "provide material support and resources -- including property, services, funding, lodging, communications equipment, personnel and transportation -- knowing and intending that this support be used in preparation for and in carrying out a violation of law -- namely, a conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction."

The indictment also alleges that the suspects were "conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives) against persons and property within the United States" during the same timeframe.

"The FBI's number one priority is counterterrorism and we continue to work with our partners to protect the U.S. and its people from harm," said acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Steinbach of the FBI's Miami Division in a news release. "To be clear, this is not an indictment against a particular community or religion. Instead, today's indictment charges two individuals for conspiring to provide material support to terrorists and to use a weapon of mass destruction."

One official knowledgeable of the case described the man's intent as "serious," but the source said it did not appear that an attack was imminent.

"This was not a sting," sources told ABC News, adding that the younger brother had been in contact with overseas radicals, possibly connected to al Qaeda.

The FBI found evidence that the younger brother had been monitoring recent FBI "sting" cases, the sources said. Infiltrating the alleged conspiracy was a "non-starter," authorities said.

If convicted, the defendants could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for the conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists charge and a life sentence on the conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction charge.

Defense attorneys representing the men did not return calls or emails from ABC News.

Feds Adopt State Water Pollution Rules for Florida
Dec 1st 2012, 02:46

The federal government is adopting state water pollution rules for Florida instead of its own version favored by environmental groups that had sued the agency.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson on Friday filed a brief statement in federal court in Tallahassee saying she had taken all actions required by a consent decree EPA entered with the environmental groups.

That triggered claims of victory by the environmentalists, but Friday evening the agency issued a news release saying it had instead adopted the state rules that the environmental groups had criticized as being too weak to stop pollution blamed for algae blooms that are chocking Florida waterways.

The state rules are favored by business, agriculture and utility interests that opposed the federal proposal, claiming it would be too expensive to implement.

Woman Tweets Bear Spray Attack
Nov 30th 2012, 18:50

A San Francisco woman took crime fighting into her own hands this week when she doused a potential thief with bear spray and delivered him into the handcuffs of police while live-tweeting the whole incident.

Photographer Sonya Yu began tweeting about the intruder Tuesday morning, saying that the suspect had been plaguing the neighborhood with thefts of deliveries.

"He's the one that's been rampantly stealing packages in our neighborhood. I put out a bait package today & will be quietly working," she tweeted.

"My bear spray, bokken, & I are still not intimidated," Yu tweeted. "He's back & strong apparently. We keep bear spray by the door, so my plan is spray, call 911, & mutilate his junk."

A bokken is a wooden sword that was used to train Japanese samurai warriors.

When she saw the suspect approach her house Tuesday afternoon, Yu said she grabbed a can of "bear spray," a powerful pepper-spray like substance, and went out on her balcony, dousing the alleged thief.

He had a knife but did not attack her, she said.

The man fled from Yu's home, but she called police and went after him, according to her Twitter feed.

"He escaped, but not far. The bear spray debilitated him & painted him orange so other cops picked him up within 5 minutes. GOT HIM!" she wrote.

San Francisco police said that the suspect, later identified as Andy Anduha, 51, walked through a gated entry and onto Yu's front porch where he began inspecting a package. Though they would not confirm Yu's name, police said the victim saw Anduha attempting to steal the package, hit him with the bear spray, and then went after him when he fled.

"The police were called and officers were in the area of the incident, and they located the suspect in the next street over suffering from bear spray to the face," Officer Albie Esparza said today.

Yu said in her tweets that she went to meet the police after the arrest and drove with them to identify Anduha.

Anduha was later booked and charged with attempted burglary and outstanding warrants for traffic violations, Esparza said.

Yu declined to answer any questions about the incident because of the ongoing police investigation.

Yu said in her messages that she was happy she had caught the alleged thief and that she had bear spray on hand, though the residual spray had burned even her skin.

"In related news, I hope none of you ever gets bear sprayed cuz (sic) even this back-spray BURNS," she said. "Tho (sic) imagining how bad he's suffering (considering I emptied half a canister of bear spray onto him) makes me feel better."

She then tweeted that she would move onto her next task of the day: "Now onto making a dinner of blowtorch prime rib roast & fried brussels (sic) sprouts for friends tonight. All in a day's work," she wrote.

Esparza, of the San Francisco police, said that the department had been trying to catch a thief who had been stealing packages throughout the area. But they recommended members of the public not to follow Yu's example in taking justice into their own hands.

"The department does not suggest victims go after any suspects because you never know if they're armed, and they could potentially hurt someone by going after them," Esparza said.

Apple Puts Eye into iDevices
Nov 30th 2012, 00:30

David Woodbridge relies on apps such as VoiceOver and Light Detector at work and home.

David Woodbridge relies on apps such as VoiceOver and Light Detector at work and home.

Mobiles and Macs lead the way in providing accessibility for the visually impaired.

DAVID Woodbridge is an Apple addict. In his house there are four iPads, four iPhones - ranging from the 3GS to the 5 - a MacBook Pro, an iMac, a MacBook Air, a gaggle of iPods - including a Shuffle, a Nano and an iPod Touch - and an Apple TV.

Oh yes, and he is totally blind.

Born prematurely, he was put into a humidicrib where the oxygen level was too high. The result was damage to the blood vessels in his eyes and fairly rapid deterioration of his sight until, in his early teens, he became blind.

Yet, through the accessibility technology Apple has made available with little or no fanfare since the II in the 1970s, in more than 30 years he has built a busy and fruitful personal and professional life.

Woodbridge's grand collection of i-gear is distributed among himself, his wife, who runs a business from the iMac and the Air, and two young boys, but it all started with his needs at home and in his job as technology manager for a large non-profit organisation.

Apple has for years led the general computing industry in building software that allows disabled people to work and play on almost level computing and communications fields with the rest of the community. The revolution caused by the arrival of touchscreen technology on mobile devices has not changed that policy of providing accessibility for all. Indeed, Apple has enhanced it by providing, and encouraging the building of, a huge range of apps to help the disabled, along with a variety of accessories such as styluses for users with motor problems and inductive ear loops for those with seriously impaired hearing.

For people such as Woodbridge, one of the biggest Apple inventions has been VoiceOver, which arrived in the third version of iOS, Apple's mobile operating system released with the iPhone 3GS. It is a vocal screen reader that makes it easy for those with impaired or no vision to navigate a touchscreen to find and use almost any app.

Tap on an iPad app icon and VoiceOver describes it. Double-tap to open the app and VoiceOver guides you through its use.

''With VoiceOver I can support not only myself but also my boys and my wife,'' Woodbridge says. ''I press the Home button on the iPhone three times to turn VoiceOver on or off when I need to help them. For example, if my wife gets an SMS when she is driving I can call up VoiceOver on her iPhone to read the message to her and we can reply using Siri, which is one of the great iOS developments, getting better all the time.

''Or, say an app on one of the iPads is not working properly. I use VoiceOver to shut the app down from App Switcher, relaunch it and triple-click to hand the iPad back with the app running as good as new.''

VoiceOver covers most things that can be done on the touchscreen.

''VoiceOver also gives me a talking interface on the Apple TV so I can browse and select movies and TV shows for my boys to watch,'' he says.

''We all have our own favourite apps, movies, music and so on, but for me one of the apps I really like is Light Detector, which allows me to make sure I have turned off all the lights before I go to bed.''

At work, Woodbridge uses a variety of software, helped by the accurate keyboard skill he has developed since his teen years. VoiceOver reads back the text of his emails and documents and guides him through sending or printing them.

''I use Find My Friends to tell me when my wife is near my office so I can go out and meet her,'' Woodbridge says, ''and the Remote app for the Apple TV lets me check on our boys when they tell me their TV program is 'almost finished, dad'.''

Mo. Couple Wins Half of Powerball Jackpot
Nov 30th 2012, 17:49

The lucky winners of half of the record $587.5 million Powerball jackpot have been identified as Mark and Cindy Hill of Dearborn, Mo., their working-class lives suddenly taking a turn to the financial stratosphere.

Cindy Hill, who with her husband has three adult sons and a 6-year-old daughter adopted from China, purchased the ticket at a Trex Mart gas station in Dearborn.

"I called my husband and told him, 'I think I am having a heart attack,'" Cindy Hill, 51, said, according to the Missouri Lottery. "I think we just won the lottery!"

Cindy, who worked as an office manager but was laid off in 2010, said that when she learned that a winning ticket was sold in Missouri, she dropped her daughter off at school, went to a convenience store for a winning numbers report, and checked her tickets in her car, according to the Missouri State Lottery.

"I was just telling my daughter the night before, 'Honey, that probably never happens (people winning)," Cindy said. "It's really going to be nice to spend time â€" not have to work â€" and be able to take trips with our family."

Cindy did mention that her husband has mentioned one extravagance -- a red Camaro.

The winning ticket was one of four Cindy purchased. She let the computer quick-pick choose the numbers, according to the Missouri Lottery. As soon as she saw that she had a winning ticket, Cindy had her mother-in-law and husband double check it.

"You know it's the Show Me State, so he said, 'Show me,'" she said.

The Hills will take home $193,750,000 in lump sum payout -- which works out to $396,000 for each person in Dearborn, a town of 496.

Speculation began running wild in the small town when 52-year-old Hill, a factory worker, updated his Facebook account late Thursday, writing, "We are truly blessed, we are lucky winners of the Powerball."

Within hours, his family began celebrating, telling ABC News Hill is one of the two big winners.

"Just shocked. I mean, I thought we were all going to have heart attacks," Hill's mother, Shirley, said Thursday.

Hill's mother says her son and his wife have been struggling financially. Hill works in a hot dog and deli packaging factory, but it was unclear whether he showed up for work Thursday night.

"I'm very happy for him. He's worked hard in his life; well, not anymore," Hill's son Jason said. "Well, I hope we all stay very grounded, stay humble and don't forget who we are."

Missouri Lottery official Susan Goedde confirmed to ABC News Thursday that one of the winning tickets was purchased at a Trex Mart in Dearborn, about 30 miles north of Kansas City.

The winning numbers were 5, 23, 16, 22 and 29; Powerball was 6.

Hill did not respond to ABC News' requests for comment. Meanwhile, employees and customers at Marlboro Village Exxon in Upper Marlboro, Md., said a tall, black, bald man held the winning ticket purchased in Arizona, according to ABC News affiliate WJLA-TV.

Surveillance cameras at the Upper Marlboro gas station captured the apparent winner walking into the store Thursday afternoon, digging into his chest pocket for his lottery tickets. After a few seconds of scanning the wad of tickets, the man began jumping up and down, pumping his arms.

The man gave the tickets to store manager Nagassi Ghebre, who says the six Powerball numbers were on the ticket, which the apparent winner said he bought in Arizona.

"And then he said, 'I got to get out of here,'" employee Freddie Lopez told WJLA.

But before leaving, the possible winner felt the need to check again to see whether he really had the ticket that millions of Americans dreamed of having.

"He says, 'Is this the right number? I don't know.' And I said, 'Yeah that's the numbers. You got them all,'" customer Paul Gaug told WJLA.

Employees and customers said the main stuck around for a few more seconds shouting, "I won," before leaving.

"He came back a minute later and said, 'I forgot to get my gas. What am I thinking?'" Lopez said.

The man drove out of the gas station in a black car and on a full tank of gas with a cash payout of $192.5 million coming his way.

"He said he lives in Maryland. I'm pretty sure," Gaug said.

The possible jackpot winner was wearing bright neon clothing and store employees told WJLA that he appeared to be a highway or construction worker.

Arizona lottery officials told WJLA that if the man does have the winning ticket, it needs to be redeemed within 180 days of the drawing in Arizona.

Missing Millionaire Could Be Hiding in Netherlands, Attorney Says
Nov 30th 2012, 05:09

A number of unusual signs point to the possibility that missing millionaire Guma Aguiar could be hiding out in the Netherlands, according to his wife's attorney.

Aguiar, 35, was last seen June 19 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Early the next morning, his 31-foot fishing boat, the T.T. Zion, washed up on a Fort Lauderdale beach with the engine running and lights on, but no sign of its Brazilian-born owner.

Since then, Aguiar's mother, Ellen Aguiar, and wife Jamie Aguiar have been embroiled in a nasty legal fight for control of his assets, valued at over $100 million.

Speculation that Aguiar could still be alive has surrounded this mysterious case ever since his disappearance. The troubled millionaire had a history of legal problems and psychiatric issues.

Attorneys have been eager to interview Aguiar's associates, friends and family members. Ellen Aguiar has been deposed and maintains she does not know anything about her son's disappearance, according to attorney William Scherer, but an attempt to interview Aguiar's sister Angelika Aguiar Drew took a baffling turn.

In response to a subpoena to appear in court for a deposition, Aguiar's sister sent the court an affidavit from the Netherlands.

"She sent the Florida court an affidavit signed in the Netherlands that she intends to move her residence or has moved her residence to the Netherlands," Scherer told ABCNews.com.

Scherer represents Aguiar's wife, Jamie Aguiar. His sister Angelika Aguiar Drew is married to Corey Drew, whom Scherer calls "one of [Guma's] insiders all along."

"Angelika and Corey have indicated that they want to move or have moved to the Netherlands. They're trying to avoid us, taking this deposition and being subject to Florida court," Scherer said. "So she filed this affidavit and then we are wondering, 'What's the Netherlands?'"

After looking into the Netherlands, Scherer claims he discovered that another one of Aguiar's "very close business associates" has also relocated to the Netherlands. Scherer declined to give the associate's name, but the information has left him baffled.

"Why are they all going to the Netherlands? What's going on there? We haven't been able to get them under oath to ask them," he said. "This all may be a coincidence, but it may not be."

Police have investigated Aguiar's disappearance as a missing person case. While some have suggested that the financially and mentally troubled millionaire may have committed suicide, no body has been found. There have also not been any reported sightings of Aguiar.

"There's all sorts of possibilities that could play in here," Fort Lauderdale Police Det. Travis Mandell told "Good Morning America" in July. "We don't know exactly what occurred out there on the ocean."

"With [Aguiar's] amount of means and what he is able to do, it would be quite easy for him to stage his own disappearance, and it would be very difficult for us to find him," Mandell said.

The U.S. Coast Guard's search for Aguiar found nothing, but Jamie Aguiar will continue to search for her husband, according to ABC News' Miami affiliate WPLG-TV.

Experts who examined GPS data from Aguiar's boat have said it could suggest a scenario in which he jumped ship and boarded a waiting boat mid-sea.

When asked if there are any other indications that Aguar could be alive, Scherer said, "I can't say. There's more stuff."

"Look, we're trying very hard to represent this lady and those children," he said. "We're trying to learn everything we can learn. We're being stonewalled by the family, and we're trying to do the best we can within the facts that we have at hand."
