In a riveting story in this week's New York Times Magazine, screenwriter Amos Kamil exposes disturbing stories of sexual abuse at one of New York City's most prestigious prep schools in the 1970s, '80s and '90s.
Kamil, who attended Horace Mann 30 years ago, reveals the stories of unnamed former classmates who say they were abused by a popular football coach who pretended to perform "physicals," as well as two other students who say a music teacher who taught at the school for three decades sexually abused them. One student who tried to raise the alarm about music teacher Johannes Somary's alleged abuse in the 1990s was ignored by the school, and Somary was allowed to teach for several more years.
Horace Mann told Kamil that the current administration was not at the school when the sexual abuse alleged in his article happened. "As an educational institution, we are deeply concerned if allegations of abuse of children are raised, regardless of when or where they may have occurred. ... It should be noted that Horace Mann School has terminated teachers based on its determination of inappropriate conduct, including but not limited to certain of the individuals named in your article," the school said in a statement to the Times.
