Calif. Beach to Be Roped off Year-Round for Seals
Jul 12th 2012, 02:14

People and pinnipeds won't be mixing at a San Diego beach after the next round in the great Southern California seal fight.

The California Coastal Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to keep up a rope barrier year-round for at least three years to discourage people from annoying harbor seals in the water at Children's Pool, a La Jolla cove used by the seals during breeding season.

Currently, all but three feet of the Children's Pool is roped off from December to May, when the animals give birth.

The city of San Diego sought the year-round barrier approved by the commission, but opponents wanted Children's Pool returned to its original purpose as a swimming area for kids.

The conflict between the two camps has sparked years of lawsuits.
