A man who confessed to three New York City murders he did not commit and spent more than three years in prison has died at age 68.

George Whitmore Jr. died Oct. 8 in a nursing home in Wildwood, N.J. The Radzieta (rad-ZEH'-tuh) Funeral Home in Cape May Courthouse, N.J., says services will be Thursday.

Whitmore was 19 in April 1964 when he was picked up in Brooklyn for questioning about an attempted rape.

He eventually confessed to that crime and to three murders.

Whitmore later asserted his innocence. He said police had beaten him and made him sign a confession without knowing what it was.

Whitmore's case was cited as an example that led the Supreme Court to require that people under arrest be told of their rights.
