For fishing types in the New York metropolitan region, it's been long known as a "trout angler's paradise," but it wasn't until this month that a rural community in the Catskills was actually declared the best fishing town in the country.

Now they're basking in the glory.

Roscoe, N.Y., a pleasant two-hour drive from New York City, has been dubbed "Ultimate Fishing Town USA" after winning a national online-voting competition that involved 300 towns across the U.S., as reported by GrindTV.com's blogger and outdoorsman, Pete Thomas. He notes that the Roscoe area "boasts some of the finest trout streams in the U.S."

Many of the competitors were in states world-famous for outdoor recreation, such as Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota, Michigan and Florida, he notes, but landing the title was no small feat. Especially since a formidable competitor in Waddington, N.Y. appeared on the scene.

The contest, he writes:

"... turned out to be a duel between Roscoe -- which has only 600 residents -- and fellow New York hamlet Waddington, with the former surging into the lead in the final hours. No other community was in serious contention since 20 finalists were named in early May. Roscoe edged Waddington, 267,433 to 265,985."

Waddington is located far upstate, nearly sharing a border with Canada, and is situated on the Saint Lawrence river.

The competition was sponsored by the World Fishing Network, which will donate $25,000 to Roscoe and feature the town in an upcoming episode, writes Thomas.

"This experience brought our community and the surrounding areas together," said Elaine Fettig of the Roscoe-Rockland Chamber of Commerce, which the article notes spearheaded the town's efforts.
"Not just Roscoe but the greater community played a role," said Evan Lavery, owner of Beaverkill Angler in Roscoe. "We get fishermen from New York City, New Jersey and other northern states such as West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio. They knew about this competition because we posted it on our website," he told Thomas.

If you're a seasoned angler, or just dying to try, Thomas notes that now's peak angling season in Roscoe, "with hungry trout rising for flies."
