Mystery Man Sees Lottery Wanted Pic, Realizes He Won $52 Million
Sep 1st 2012, 03:56

The hunt for a mysterious lottery winner whose photo was released in an effort to find him this week ended just hours after it began.

Bladimir and Marita Agnite of Fremont, Calif., came forward to claim the $52 million Mega Millions jackpot after a friend or relative told Bladimir he had seen his picture on the news.

Speaking to reporters this evening, Bladimir Agnite said he confirmed his win on his computer and then woke up his wife in the middle of the night.

"I said, 'We're wanted -- in the lotto," he said.

After she, too, confirmed the win, she said, according to California lottery officials, "I started crying. He hugged me and we just cried and cried."

California lottery officials earlier released a still shot of an unidentified man who turned out to be Bladimir Agnite, dressed in a white T-shirt and sunglasses, buying the winning ticket in the July 27 drawing at a Kwik Stop in Fremont, Calif.

Bladimir Agnite later checked the winning ticket multiple times at Raley's and Safeway stores in the Bay Area, in Northern California, but had not officially come forward to claim the prize, according to the lottery commission.

He said that despite his follow-up checks, he didn't realize he had really won.

The couple could use the money. Bladimir Agnite was laid off from a printing company and Marita Agnite works as a hospital nurse, according to a lottery statement on the winning couple. They plan to use their winnings to buy a house and pay for college for their children, and she plans to keep working.

Mega Millions winners have one year from the time of the drawing to claim their prize.

"The California Lottery truly believes that when a person buys a lottery ticket with the hope and prayer of changing their lives, we should do all we can to connect them with their winnings. We believe this effort will make a lot of Californians very happy," said Russ Lopez, deputy director of corporate communications for the lottery.

The California Lottery said it began sending out photos of all apparent winners of unclaimed prizes recently. In fiscal year 2011-2012, more than $20 million went unclaimed, it said.

Texas Fan Dies in Escalator Fall at Game
Aug 31st 2012, 20:24

A fan who was attending a preseason game at the Houston Texans' Reliant Stadium died after toppling off of an escalator while trying to slide down its handrails.

The death of 25-year-old Jonathan Kelly, a Texans fan at the game with friends, was accidental, though an investigation is ongoing, police said today.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Kelly was trying to slide down the side of the escalator when he fell more than 60 feet to his death. He was riding the escalator from the sixth level of the stadium, the highest level for fan seating, according to the report.

Witnesses told ABC News station KTRK that emergency services were unable to revive the man.

"I saw the aftermath. I was outside taking a cigarette and we saw them loading him up on the stretcher, sticking him in the car. There were about 15 HPD officers and EMTs near him," said fan Jared Bellr.

"It's sad. My heart goes out to the family. Me and family recently lost a loved one, our daughter," Amanda Castro said. "This year will be two years so when you are having fun -- it's just unfortunate, unexpected tragedy that happens."

Officials at the stadium said today that they are reviewing safety procedures as part of the investigation into Kelly's death. Another fan died at the stadium during summer, 2011, trying to catch a ball thrown to him in the stands by a player on the field.

"I don't know that anything changes," Houston Texans President Jamie Rootes said today, according to KTRK. "But certainly when you have something like this, we'll certainly be reinforcing those messages to our fans as we approach opening day."

Hitchhiker Crushed in Train Freight Car
Aug 31st 2012, 19:02

A 19-year-old train-hopper, who became trapped underneath heavy sheets of steel inside a freight car on Thursday, was rescued when a surgeon rushed to the scene to perform an emergency amputation.

The homeless teen, who authorities have not named citing medical privacy laws, was discovered Thursday by rail workers in South Salt Lake City, Utah, much of his lower body pinned under several hundred pounds of steel.

The man and his dog had hopped the train in Denver, illegally riding the rails in an open-top freight car filled with heavy sheets of metal each between 10 and 15 feet long, authorities said.

"He became trapped when the load of tight steel shifted and pinned him underneath," said Chief Ron Morris of the South Salt Lake Fire Department.

By the time emergency workers arrived at the scene, the man had been trapped for eight hours. His dog was already dead.

Workers tried for two hours to lift the steel off of him using a small crane, Morris told ABC News, but were unsuccessful as the man began losing consciousness.

Working against the clock, rescue workers set up a "sanitary MASH unit inside the car," and flew in a surgeon from University Hospital to perform an emergency amputation, Morris said.

The man's right leg was amputated. His left leg and pelvis were severely crushed and his right arm was fractured. The man was flown to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition.

Harvard Has 'Culture of Cheating,' Grad Says
Aug 31st 2012, 17:32

Administrators at Harvard College have accused 125 students of cheating on a final exam last spring, an allegation that Harvard graduate and author Eric Kester said reflects a "culture of cheating" at the school.

Officials at the prestigious university in Cambridge, Mass., said Thursday that they had found at least 125 students who they believe collaborated on a take-home final exam during the spring semester this year.

"We take academic integrity very seriously because it goes to the heart of our educational mission," Michael D. Smith, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, said in a statement. "Academic dishonesty cannot and will not be tolerated at Harvard."

As of now, the school noted, the cheating is simply an allegation that will continue to be investigated. An academic board pored over 250 final exams from the Introduction to Congress class taught by Professor Matthew B. Platt, according to the Harvard Crimson.

Platt noticed similarities among 10 to 20 of the exams that were turned in, and alerted the Administrative Board, which then conducted an investigation, according to the report. The board then found similarities among 125 exams.

The student newspaper described how prior to the deadline to turn in the exam, panicked students packed into the office of a teaching assistant, asking for help explaining the essay questions on the test. Platt reportedly canceled his own office hours before the due date, the Crimson noted.

The school did not release the names of the accused students, although a student told ABC News that some of the individuals who took the class might have graduated in May.

Kester, a 2008 Harvard graduate who wrote a memoir, "That Book About Harvard," about his own struggles with academic honesty and the high expectations of Harvard, said the cheating scandal didn't surprise him.

"When I was a student there, I definitely noticed there was a culture of cheating there," Kester told ABC News today. "There's a lot of pressure internally and externally to succeed at Harvard and when kids who are not used to failing feel these things, it can really bend their ethics in ways I didn't expect to see."

Kester said he struggled through a calculus class during his time at Harvard, and at one point was approached by a group of students who were planning to cheat. He wrestled with his own morals about whether to join them before deciding against it, he said.

"It comes down to the responsibility of the students, they're adults, they know cheating is wrong, that's the bottom line," he said. "At the same time I'm slightly sympathetic to the students, because in our society and especially at Harvard, there are high expectations to become the next Mark Zuckerberg."

Kester noted that many of the students who cheat at Harvard are smart enough to pass the classes on their own.

"Most people who cheat at Harvard don't really need to, it's just sort of a way of making themselves feel safer of not failing," he said.

Harvard's reputation as a place that graduates politicians, CEOs and entrepreneurs only adds to the pressure that students feel while studying at the school, Kester said. Many of the students have likely felt pressure their entire lives to gain admittance to the school, and cannot risk failing out of Harvard once they're accepted.

Ex-Marine Suspected in N.J. Pathmark Killings
Aug 31st 2012, 16:21

The man suspected of killing two people early this morning at an Old Bridge, N.J., grocery store before shooting himself to death is a 23-year-old former Marine who worked at the grocery store for two weeks, according to the town's mayor.

The suspect left the Old Bridge shopping plaza at about 4 a.m. and returned to a Pathmark grocery store, having changed into camouflage clothing, armed with an AK-47 and an automatic handgun, Mayor Owen Henry said today.

Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said the victims were "not specifically targeted; everyone in the store was a target."

Both victims, a man and a woman, were young adults, Mayor Henry said, adding that the woman is believed to be 18. The male victim was 24, according to WABC-TV.

Kaplan said a total of 16 shots were fired. The suspect shot himself after shooting the two young adults, Henry said.

Police had responded to shots inside the Pathmark on Route 9 at 4 a.m. The alleged gunman was dead when police arrived, Kaplan said.

His name could not be confirmed.

Two windows near the entrance to the Pathmark were shot out. The suspect might have started firing as he entered the store, accounting for the store's blown-out windows, Kaplan said.

The gunman's motive is still under investigation, Owen said, adding that law enforcement is in the process of notifying the families of the dead.

"This is the worst phone call a mayor can receive," Henry had told NewJersey.com earlier this morning of the information he obtained at about 6:30 a.m. "You can prepare for these things, but you can't prevent them."

Several employees were inside the store, which was preparing to open at 6 a.m. The other employees who were in the store at the time of the shooting were not injured, Owen said.

Numerous employees were taken across the street to a T.G.I. Friday's and many were treated for trauma at waiting ambulances.

ABC News: U.S.: Romney's Son Chokes Up Over Immigrant Past

Romney's Son Chokes Up Over Immigrant Past
Aug 31st 2012, 00:54

Mitt Romney's son Craig choked up tonight when he recounted for the Republican National Convention how his grandparents immigrated from Mexico to live the American dream.

"It's easy to forget that the story of my father's success begins with the story of two immigrants - my grandfathers - who came to this country with little more than hope in the opportunity of America," he said.

Craig Romney's heartfelt story of his family's immigrant roots was among more than half a dozen convention speakers who highlighted their immigrant backgrounds, but it has created what one expert describes as an "awkward dance" because of the GOP's reputation for being hostile to immigration.

South Dakota Sen. John Thune told of his Norwegian grandfather immigrating through Ellis Island and changing his name along the way. Former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum recounted how his father immigrated "from the mountains of northern Italy, on a ship named Providence."

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul told of his great grandfather who arrived penniless to live the "American Dream," and also cited struggles and triumphs of friends -- a Cambodian family in Kentucky and Vietnamese brothers who arrived on a "leaky boat."

Utah House candidate Mia Love had only two minutes to speak, but managed to mention her parents immigrating from Haiti "with $10 in their pocket."

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's said she is the "proud daughter of Indian immigrants," while Texas Senate candidate Ted Cruz told a "love story of freedom" about his Irish-Italian working-class mom and his Cuban refugee dad.

"They made a good effort at trying to have their stage build bridges to those communities they are trying to reach out to," said Clarissa Martinez, director of civic engagement and immigration at the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group.

"While they simultaneously were doing that, they were unveiling a Republican platform that in many ways detracts from what they were doing on the stage... There is a little bit of a mixed signal or a mixed message being sent here," Martinez said.

She said the convention speeches "up the ante" on Romney to clarify where he stands on immigration.

"Is he the candidate that the Republican platform would convey or is he the candidate that some of the speakers on that stage that would represent," Martinez said.

The official party platform is seen as unfriendly to immigration, although it is specifically tailored to illegal immigration. It supports self-deportation, encouraging "illegal aliens to return home voluntarily" by making it nearly impossible to support themselves in America.

It calls for building a "double-layer fence" along the U.S.-Mexico border, implementing a nationwide E-Verify system to prevent undocumented workers from being hired and making English the official language.

The GOP opposes "any form of amnesty" and supports denying federal funding to universities that, as the platform says, "provide instate tuition rates to illegal aliens, in open defiance of federal law."

"It's a really kind of an awkward dance," said Stephen Nuno, an expert on minority political participation and assistant politics professor at Northern Arizona University. "You can't on the one hand say we love these people, we love this story, we love the character this story creates and builds, but we are going to do everything we can to discourage more people from immigrating like this again. And if they are here we are going to make life so miserable that they want to leave."

Latinos are overwhelmingly voting Democratic. Only 23 percent of Hispanics said they are supporting Romney this year in a NBC/Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll released last week.

Rep. Mario Diaz Balart, R-Fla., said Republicans' problem with Hispanic voters is not about policy, it's about rhetoric.

"Unfortunately we have had some people… who frankly made it an issue to stir up their electoral base. They used some language that was very damaging, very painful," Balart said Wednesday at an ABC/Univision/National Journal breakfast.

LA Police Capt. Loses Command Over Slammed Nurse
Aug 30th 2012, 23:37

A Los Angeles Police Department captain has been removed from his command for his handling of an incident in which two of his officers were caught on surveillance tape slamming a handcuffed nurse to the pavement and then apparently fist bumping each other.

Michelle Jordan, 34, from Sunland, Calif., was allegedly pulled over for a cell phone violation on Aug. 21. A security camera at a Del Taco restaurant shows one of the officers shoving the woman to the ground. Once she is standing again, she is handcuffed and an officer body slams her to the ground and lands on top of her.

The two officers, who have not been identified, appear to give each other fist bumps after putting the woman in a patrol car.

LAPD Police Chief Charlie Beck said in a statement Wednesday he has removed Captain Joseph Hiltner from his command. The officers involved in the incident have also been removed from field duties while the Internal Affairs Group conducts a criminal and administrative investigation.

Beck said, "I have serious concerns about this incident and I believe the commanding officer of Foothill Area was severely deficient in his response... Proper steps were not taken, including appropriate notifications and the removal of the involved officers from the field."

Hiltner could not be reached for comment.

Attorney S.J. Nazif, who will represent Jordan along with his partner Arthur Corona, told ABCNews.com his team is pleased Beck is taking these steps. However, Nazif said, it is not enough.

"It falls short of a resolution for our client, who has suffered physically and emotionally at the hands of these officers, and it falls short of providing a resolution of this problem that still plagues the LAPD," Nazif said.

Physicians are examining Jordan's injuries, which KABC reports include contusions to her face and body, according to police reports.

Beck has ordered the video of the incident to be played at all roll calls and said commanding officers will attend roll calls and discuss the use of force issues throughout the department.

"Every Los Angeles Police Officer, regardless of rank, will be held accountable for their actions," Beck said.
