San Francisco's Michael Jackson flash mob on Saturday (ContributorNetwork)

As the 3 o'clock bell tolled at the Ferry Building on Saturday afternoon, a mob of fedora-fitted people rushed to the center of the plaza on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. As they rushed towards a solitary female, outfitted in the style of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, they began to move to the sounds of "Beat It" with slick choreography. If I didn't know better, I would have sworn I walked into a middle of a musical. All the dancers whirled and mimed the gestures that made Michael Jackson one of the most recognized entertainers in the world. Hands shot up in sync to timed musical jabs, and they were all very happy in their element of expression.

This weekend's flash mob held around much of San Francisco's Financial District and in the Castro is in honor of the second anniversary of Michael Jackson's passing. Enthusiastic, yet surprised people encircled the dancers, even as others joined in as well, swelling our area even more. The group watched with rapt excitement that infectiously spread from the energetic dancers. A bold few in the audience joined the mob, while others bobbed their heads to the songs they knew. There were a few missed steps, but who cares? The expression of heartfelt dance was the star this afternoon, as they danced in honor of Michael.

The group behind this amazing spectacle is Bay Area Flash Mob. Based in San Francisco, many of the founding members had met at the worldwide flash mob event "Thrill the World" in Oakland years earlier. It was from that love that they developed their own group. They have been featured on ABC Live and KRON 4 as well as auditioning with "America's Got Talent!" They also have performed to Janet Jackson's music in varied locations in San Francisco. They assembled at Ferry Plaza, the Cable Car turnaround, in Union Square, and finally ended at the corner of Castro and Market.

Expressions of confusion creased some viewers' faces as they passed along, some stopping to watch as the group went from "Beat It" to "Smooth Criminal," then ending with "Thriller", when many of the dancers really let their inner zombies loose. In each of the performances, there was enthusiasm, but none more than in the Castro, where Pride celebrations were already in full effect for the weekend.
