Top Line
Mitt Romney has crossed the threshold, gathering the majority of delegates in last night's Texas primary. And to celebrate this moment in his trajectory to the Republican nomination, Romney chose to stand onstage at a Las Vegas fundraiser ... with Donald Trump.
Trump is still embracing "birther" theories, saying that President Obama was not born in the United States, despite the fact that the Obama administration has clearly proven he was. Romney appearing with Trump is a revealing moment in how the Rommey campaign thinks about the general election. Team Romney thinks that even now -- with the primary battle in the rear view mirror -- there is a danger in alienating someone like Donald Trump -- the campaign doesn't know what he might do on the outside, and it does not know what people who agree with Trump might do with their support.
But the Romney campaign is no longer just wooing Republican base voters, it is in the hunt for those crucial independents, too. So why cater to the Donald? Check out this week's Top Line to find out.
