Behind the scenes on Kimmel's big night

Political Punch
This past weekend was what Washington, D.C. likes to call "nerd prom," more officially known as the White House Correspondents' Association's Dinner. Saturday's entertainment was none other than Jimmy Kimmel. Just before the big night, Kimmel opened up to ABC News' Jake Tapper about preparing the routine, lessons learned from past comedians, and deciding what is off limits for a crowd that includes the President of the United States and Kim Kardashian.

As it turned out, the comedian zinged both Obama and Kardashian, and took a few shots at politicians, presidential candidates and other stars in the room. And when the crowd gave lukewarm responses to a few jokes, he was quick to assign blame: "Jake Tapper wrote that one."

Overall, Kimmel had the audience in stitches, with plenty of jokes for -- and about -- Democrats, Republicans, and Hollywood stars alike -- which is exactly how he had planned it.

"Being a talk show host is kind of like being a politician in that you don't want to alienate half of your audience," said Kimmel. "I just look for if someone does something dumb whether it be Mitt Romney or Joe Biden ... You know saying the president has a big stick, that's something you can't ignore."
