Canada to Force Striking Rail Workers Back to Jobs
May 28th 2012, 16:44

Canada's labor minister says the government plans to introduce back-to-work legislation after negotiations between Canadian Pacific Railway and its striking locomotive engineers and conductors fell apart over the weekend.

The strike has stopped freight service at Canada's second largest railway since Wednesday.

Labor Minister Lisa Raitt said Monday the strike can't go on, and she called Canadian Pacific Railway the backbone of the country's economy.

She said last week she would force strikers back to work if necessary.

The railway and the union said talks broke off Sunday with little hope of resumption.

The back-to-work legislation would be introduced Monday, and the strikers could be ordered to work later this week.
