A former New York City police officer is facing the possibility of life in prison after being convicted of grabbing a schoolteacher off a street and sexually assaulting her at gunpoint.
Michael Pena was due to be sentenced Monday. The 28-year-old was convicted in March of one of the top charges in the case, committing a criminal sex act. A jury deadlocked on rape charges.
The woman testified that Pena forced her into an apartment building courtyard last August and raped her and forced her into other sex acts. She says he threatened to shoot her in the face if she refused.
Through his lawyer, Pena admitted attacking the woman but says they never had intercourse. He was off duty during the attack.
Pena was fired right after his conviction.
