Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant says it was "petty" for North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue to insult Mississippi when talking about voters in her state approving a ballot measure banning same-sex marriage.

Perdue was in Greenville, N.C., on Friday when she said she was disappointed voters in her state approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman. She says people are wondering what's going on in North Carolina and that the vote made her state "look like Mississippi."

Republican Bryant he intends to write to Democrat Perdue about her comments.

In Jackson, Miss., Bryant said it was disappointing that Perdue referred to Mississippi "to disparage a popular vote in her own state."

Mississippi voters approved an amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2004.
