NC Party Chair Submits Resignation _ Then Stays
May 13th 2012, 02:45

The chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party has decided to stay on the job after the party's State Executive Committee didn't accept his resignation offer.

Top state elected officials including Gov. Beverly Perdue had been pressuring David Parker to resign as chairman, saying his handling of sexual harassment allegations against the former party executive director had become a distraction.

Parker announced last month he would call for a new election for his job but wouldn't run. He asked the committee to accept his resignation Saturday, but the committee voted 269-203 to reject his resignation offer. Parker, a Statesville attorney, then said he wouldn't be stepping aside despite receiving phone calls from people he wouldn't identify.

Executive Committee member Lloyd Scher said Parker did nothing wrong in following the advice of the party's attorney in settling the allegations confidentially.
