Police say missing Tenn. mother and girls are in 'extreme danger'
May 7th 2012, 07:23

Investigators searching for the missing Bain family, who vanished 10 days ago after leaving their Tennessee home, say that the mother and three children are in "extreme danger" after the discovery of two bodies in a Mississippi home where the main suspect in their disappearance was last seen.

Police who have teamed with the FBI in the investigation say that they believe 35-year-old Adam Mayes of Guntown, Miss., who appears to be a friend of 31-year-old Jo Ann Bain's family, is on the run after having kidnapped Bain and her three daughters. Investigators believe that Bain and her girls, Adrienne, 14, Alexandria, 12, and 8-year-old Kyliyah have been disguised by Mayes.

"We do have information that he has altered the appearances of everybody including himself, primarily from cutting their hair," FBA spokesman Joel Siskovic said. "The girls may have far shorter hair than the pictures out there."

FBI agents and local sheriff's deputies continued the search by helicopter last Sunday while chasing down leads on land, desperate to find the family that was last seen April 27 leaving their home in Whiteville, Tenn., which is located between Jackson and Memphis.

Investigators were motivated by a gruesome discovery Saturday morning, when they found two dead bodies at a home in Mississippi.

"Early days of the investigation led us to suspect Adam Mayes," Siskovic said. "Other information led to a location in Mississippi where we executed federal search warrants. During the course of searching that location, two bodies were found."

The two bodies were found in Guntown at a residence where Mayes was last seen, he said.

Investigators haven't revealed whose bodies they found, but the discovery led them to issue an Amber Alert in search for the Bains.

"Time is clearly at the essence," former FBI agent and ABC News consultant Brad Garrett said. "If we have the mother who is dead and one of her daughters, law enforcement has every reason to believe that the other two daughters are definitely in jeopardy."

The FBI and U.S. Marshal's Service have offered a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the whereabouts of Bain and her daughters, and the arrest of their alleged abductor.

Pictures obtained by ABC News from the girls' father's Facebook page show Mayes with the children and their father, with Mayes identified under the name Paco Rodrigass, which police say is an alias. Mayes also appears in a photo obtained by ABC News with Jo Ann Bain's husband, Gary.

Police say they believe the series of events that led to their disappearance began 10 days ago, after the family returned to Memphis for a funeral.

It was on Friday April 27th, Bain's husband Gary reported them missing. Jo Ann Bain's truck was discovered less than three miles from her home Sunday April 29, the same day that police questioned Mayes, and let him go.

By the following Tuesday, police say, they realized that Mayes had given them misleading information. When they went to arrest him, he had vanished.

"We don't know exactly where he's going," police said. "We do consider him armed and dangerous."

Neighbors of the Bain family, including Melvin Heron, have expressed shock and concern over the missing woman and her girls.

"I don't know what to think of it," he said. "This is just devastating, what happened to them."

The missing mom and husband Gary were days away from moving the family to Arizona when she and her children vanished.

Meanwhile, Mayes' landlord, Mary Patterson-Mayes, said she is not surprised by all the trouble at all. "He killed those people," she said. "I truly believe it."
