Officer in Amadou Diallo Shooting to Get Gun Back

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has agreed to restore a service revolver to one of the four officers involved in the shooting of unarmed African immigrant Amadou Diallo 13 years ago.

Diallo's mother, Kadiatou, tells the New York Post (bit.ly/UEWzJJ) she's furious about the decision to restore Kenneth Boss's gun. The newspaper first reported the story on Tuesday.

The NYPD didn't offer an official explanation for why it's being returned now.

Diallo was killed in a barrage of bullets fired by police officers who mistook his wallet for a gun. He was hit by 19 of the 41 shots. The officers were acquitted in the 1999 shooting.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association tells The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/QOoitw) the decision was appropriate and overdue.

Boss now works in the Special Operations Division. It responds to situations like water rescues and hostage negotiations.
