The husband of an Iraqi-American woman whose beating death in March initially raised fears of a hate crime was arrested Friday for investigation of murder in what police said was a case of domestic violence.
Kassim al-Himidi was jailed in connection with the killing of 32-year-old Shaima Alawadi at their home, El Cajon police Chief Jim Redman said.
The chief declined to comment on the motive but described it as domestic violence.
"Criminal investigations build, evidence builds, and you reach a point where you have enough evidence to move forward and that's what happened in this case," Redman said.
The killing drew international attention after the victim's daughter told reporters she found a note by her mother's body that said, "Go back to your country, you terrorist."
Redman said there are no other suspects.
Al-Hamidi went to Iraq for two weeks to bury his wife and returned voluntarily. Police did not try to prevent him from leaving the country because he was not a suspect at the time.
