A 90-year-old woman's leg was amputated after she was attacked by an alligator near her house.
Florida wildlife officials say Margaret Webb was walking near her southwest Florida home Wednesday when an 8-foot alligator lunged out of a canal.

Officials say the animal tried to drag the woman into the water, but she was able to hang on long enough for a man driving by to stop and help her. That good Samaritan tried to shoot the alligator. Officials initially reported the alligator swallowed part of the woman's leg, but that wasn't the case. The leg was badly injured.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers are searching for the alligator.
Webb was in critical condition.
