The U.S. Navy has awarded a $94 million contract for planning and ordering materials for the repair of a submarine severely damaged by fire while in dry dock in Maine.

The Naval Sea Systems Command said Friday it awarded the contract to a team led by General Dynamics Electric Boat to provide design and planning, ordering of repair materials and pre-fabrication to restore the USS Miami. The contract includes an option worth $6 million more.

The submarine is based in Groton (GRAH'-tun), Conn. It suffered $450 million in damage in the May fire while docked in Kittery, Maine.

A former shipyard worker from Portsmouth, N.H., is accused of setting the fire and awaits trial in federal court in Portland, Maine. He told Navy investigators he set the fire because he was feeling anxious and wanted to go home.
