Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is warning that the first decline in international aid to developing nations in years is putting the achievement of U.N. goals to reduce poverty by 2015 at risk in many countries.
The U.N. chief told a news conference Thursday on a new report on gaps in achieving the Millennium Development Goals that essential medicines and Internet access are still much too expensive for the poor.
Ban urged donor nations to step up their international aid, saying: "Do not place the burden of fiscal austerity on the backs of the poor â" either in your own countries or abroad."
The report cites a $167 billion gap between the amounts committed by donors and the actual amount of aid given out.
