| China, Russia call for dialogue only on Syria Jun 7th 2012, 08:27  Reuters – 22 mins ago BEIJING (Reuters) - China reiterated on Thursday its opposition to foreign intervention in Syria and efforts at "regime change" after accusations that Syrian troops and militia loyal to President Bashar al-Assad had massacred dozens of villagers. "The Syrian issue should be resolved based on envoy Annan's six-point proposal within the U.N. framework," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping told a news conference. "You can't say that because you dislike a country's system, you can then think of ways to overturn its government." At least 78 people at Mazraat al-Qabeer were reported to have been killed on Wednesday, which followed one last month in Houla. The United Nations estimates that more than 10,000 people have died in the unrest that has lasted more than a year. Cheng also repeated a call for all sides in Syria to halt the violence. Cheng made the comments at the end of a regional summit where Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, urged international support on Tuesday for U.N. envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan for Syria, despite calls from Western states for a tougher response to the bloodshed.
