| Jubilee is no party for Scotland Yard Jun 3rd 2012, 05:25  AFP – 35 mins ago Four days of diamond jubilee festivities including a river flotilla, a carriage procession and a concert pose a huge challenge for police, already stretched by the upcoming Olympic Games. Scotland Yard has been preparing for the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth for 18 months, and had some practice last year with the wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton. "The threats will be multiple," said Stephen Kavanagh, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. "They will range from people getting cramped in the crowds, from people suffering medical illnesses, all the way through to anything that exists in a major capital city and a major terrorist event," Kavanagh said. "But we're confident we're going to have a safe, memorable and enjoyable weekend." Around 6,000 officers will be deployed during peak periods, ranging from bobbies on the beat to discreet VIP protection -- 1,000 more than were on duty for William's April 2011 wedding. The threat of a terror attack looms large in the wake of the July 7, 2005 suicide bombings on London underground trains and a bus which killed 52 people, one day after London was named as Olympic host city. London has over the years also suffered from Irish republican bombings. The four-day jubilee holiday starting Saturday has its own potential flashpoints, from the giant open air concert outside Buckingham Palace to thousands of street picnics across the country expected to attract six million people. Then there is the carriage procession taking the queen and the royal family through the capital, accompanied by mounted police. Police have been keeping an eye on potentially dangerous royal-obsessives for some time, according to The Times. But the challenge that sets the jubilee apart from the Olympics which start on July 27 is the extraordinary 1,000-vessel flotilla that the queen will lead down the River Thames on Sunday. The queen's barge and the other boats will travel slowly down a seven-mile stretch of the Thames, taking four hours, throughout which security forces will be on high alert. Specialists will have to search all the boats, the banks and 14 bridges which have all been closed for the occasion. On the river itself there will be 190 boats for the military, firefighters and police, with 23 police boats alone. As well as the police manning the flotilla there will also be 7,000 volunteer helpers. The possible hazards of the nautical element were highlighted when a wetsuit-clad protester managed to halt the Oxford-Cambridge boat race on the Thames in April, despite tight security. Organisers have underscored that they have taken measures to stop anyone from disrupting the parade by swimming in the Thames. But the head of Scotland Yard Bernard Hogan-Howe told lawmakers in April that there was a "limit" to what police could do to protect any event that is held in the public domain. Police will, however, also be part of the ceremony. Scotland Yard's "Grey Escort" -- horses from the police mounted branch that accompany the sovereign on special occasions -- will be leading the carriage procession through central London. Officers on the route will also be wearing their dress uniforms of smart tunics and white gloves.
