A former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend is facing a jury's recommended sentence of 26 years in prison at sentencing Thursday.

George W. Huguely V awaits scheduled sentencing at 1 p.m. in a Charlottesville courtroom for the May 2010 beating death of Yeardley Love. Huguely was convicted of second-degree murder in February by a jury, which recommended a 26-year sentence that included 1 year for grand larceny.

Judges in Virginia typically heed a jury's recommended sentence. Huguely's attorneys say they're seeking a 14-year sentence.

The 22-year-old Love and Huguely, 24, were both U.Va. lacrosse players from Maryland. Based on court testimony, the two had a volatile relationship that finally ended in Huguely beating Love in her Charlottesville apartment after a day of drinking and golf.
