Russia Cancels Meeting Meant to Spur Syria Action

Russia has canceled a meeting of key nations and international organizations aimed at stepping up pressure on the Syrian government and opposition to end the violence and start political negotiations.

In a surprise move, Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin on Thursday invited ambassadors from countries that agreed on guidelines for a Syrian-led political transition in Geneva in June to a meeting at U.N. headquarters Friday morning to press for action.

Russia's U.N. Mission said the postponement was at the request of some members of the Action Group for Syria. It includes the U.N. and Arab League chiefs, the five permanent Security Council nations â€" the U.S., Russia, China, France and Britain â€" Turkey, the European Union and Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar, which hold key posts in the Arab League.
