1. Romney Returns to US
Presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney has returned to the US after a controversial seven-day, three-nation overseas tour. There is speculation that Romney will name a running mate soon.
2. Needle Found in Airline Sandwich
A needle was found in a sandwich on a Air Canada flight from Victoria, British Columbia to Toronto. Earlier in July, needles got into six sandwiches on Delta Air Lines flights from Amsterdam to Minneapolis, Seattle and Atlanta. Passengers discovered four of them.

3. US Women's Gymnastics Team Takes Gold
The US women's gymnastics team has won its first gold medal since 1996. Fueled by spectacular performances in the vault and floor routine, Team USA beat its closest competitor, Russia, by five points.
4. Phelps Sets Olympic Record
Swimmer Michael Phelps became the winningest Olympian in history, capturing his 19th medal in 4 x 200m freestyle relay. Fellow swim team member Allison Schmitt set an Olympic record while winning her first gold medal in the 200m freestyle.
5. Author Gore Vidal Dead at 86
American writer Gore Vidal has died. Vidal was best known for novels such as "Burr" and "Myra Breckenridge," his play "The Best Man" and voluminous articles on a variety of subjects, including politics.
